What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is concerned with human function and movement. It addressesproblems with mobility, dysfunction and pain such as those arising from Musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory and chronic disability conditions, or from Mental illness and intellectual impairment.

Our physiotherapists use a variety of manual exercise and electrotherapy approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being, taking account of variations in health status.

Our approach is science-based and we’re committed to extending, applying, evaluating and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs how we practise and deliver our treatment. The application of sound clinical judgment and informed interpretation is central to every aspect of the care offered by our physiotherapists.

What do physiotherapists treat?

Physiotherapists treat a variety of conditions including, joint stiffness and pain, muscle tension and pain, osteoarthritis, poor posture, post-surgical conditions, repetitive stress injuries, sports injuries, whiplash and work related injuries.

What to expect when visiting the physiotherapist

Your initial appointment with the physiotherapist will last approximately 30mins, they will ask you a series of questions about yourself, these will relate to the complaint with which you present, your general health (past and present), medical history (including operations and illnesses) and whether you are taking any medication.

Although some questions may seem unnecessary, all of this information helps us to make a diagnosis to decide a suitable treatment plan for you.

In order to make an accurate diagnosis your practitioner may require you to dress down enabling them to see the troublesome area of your body. If you are concerned about the suitability of clothing please contact us prior to the appointment.

The physiotherapists will evaluate your condition and will always aim to identify the source of your discomfort or dysfunction. Once evaluated, the therapist can develop a treatment program that will usually involve some form of manual therapy and exercise, as well as other modalities such as ultrasound, massage etc. You will also receive instruction in a home exercise program as well as education on body mechanics and posture in order to prevent the reoccurrence of your original injury.
